Windefender2009 – a New Infection From an Old Source
Before I tell you about WinDefender2009 let me tell you a little bit about myself so that you will know I do know what I am talking about here. I have been working with computers for over 20 years at this point in time. I have done programming, building and repair, tech support, and IT. I am a trained Microsoft Professional who is certified to work on PCs and networks. I do research on the new threats to computers and computer networks as part of my work. I am imparting my knowledge to you so that you can protect yourself and your computer.
WinDefender2009 is the successor of WinDefender2008. It was of course made by the same people that made WinDefender2008. WinDefender2009 makes its way onto your computer through trojans, usually the Zlob or Vundo trojan. At this point you start getting false security alerts telling you that your computer is either infected or under attack and you should dl WinDefender2009 to protect yourself. At WinDefender2009’s site you will be offered a free scan. Do not let it scan your computer. It will plant more malware onto your computer and you will get even more pop ups, this time telling you to buy the full version. Not only that, but the scan is a fake that will show you legitimate Windows files as being the infection and malware that won’t be installed unless you purchase the software.
If you purchase the software WinDefender2009 will find no other rogue software on your computer. That is inconvenient, but it gets worse. WinDefender2009 will install more adware, spyware, and malware on your computer. Also you have just given your credit card and personal information to known scammers. This is a good way to get your identity stolen and other unauthorized charges placed on your credit card. The pop ups do not go away. You just get different pop ups. Your computer’s speed will drastically slow down as WinDefender2009 runs other processes in the back ground hogging system resources.
Removal of WinDefender2009 is a real problem. Most anti-spyware programs out there do not get all the files of the program off your computer, and if a file is missed WinDefender2009 will reinstall itself. If you are good with computers and comfortable in the registry editor you might be able to remove WinDefender2009 manually, but it is a time consuming and risky endeavor as you can accidentally remove files needed by Windows to operate properly.
To avoid getting the trojans that would first infect your computer you need to avoid a few activities. The first one to avoid is going to porn sites. Many porn sites are corrupt and will infect your computer with all kinds of malware in just one visit. Another activity to avoid is opening spam email and files in emails that have been passed around a lot. Spam can contain files that will infect your computer just by opening them, and with the emails passed around… well you just don’t know who else has passed it on and what they may have been infected with.
